What Is Hypodermic Tubing?

Hypodermic tubing is small-diameter stainless steel tubing, seamless, welded and drawn over a floating plug to develop final OD, wall, and ID—delivering concentricity, smooth internal surfaces, and tight, repeatable tolerances required for medical applications.

  • Process: TIG-welded & drawn; floating plug for ID control
  • Typical finish windows: ID/OD 8–16 Ra (standard); annealed 16–32 Ra
  • Common OD range supplied: ~0.008–0.300 in; ultra-thin walls available

Materials for Medical Use

Accumetrics supplies hypodermic tubing primarily in Type 304 and Type 316/316LVM stainless steels for corrosion resistance and strength in contact with body fluids and sterilants.

  • 304: extensive stock & quick-turn draws
  • 316/316L: for chloride environments and implant-adjacent accessories
  • Tempers: full hard through annealed per application needs

Importance of Surface Finish in Medical Tubing

Precision surface finish is critical for performance and biocompatibility in medical applications.

Why It Matters

  • Ensures smooth inner diameter (ID) for consistent fluid flow and catheter performance
  • Minimizes risk of particle generation and contamination
  • Enhances biocompatibility and cleaning efficiency
  • Reduces friction during insertion or assembly
  • Supports high-quality welds and connections in micro-assemblies

Superior Fabrications/Secondary Ops

We manufacture the tubing and finish it to print—one supplier, cleaner paperwork.

Tube Manufacturing to Enhance to the Following:

  • Cut to length (burr-controlled)
  • Bending & coiling
  • Flaring, swaging, grooving, dimpling
  • Pointing/beveling & laser cut features

Cleanliness & Packaging

  • Commercial clean or enhanced ultrasonic processes
  • Passivation on request (citric)
  • Dedicated medical packaging & ID protection

Engineering Support

  • Application review and manufacturability feedback
  • Help translating gauge sizes to OD/ID/wall tolerances
  • Process guidance for tight clearances, flow, and fit
  • Rapid prototyping paths & blanket release programs
